TREASURES WE HAVE FOUND FOR BUSINESS !For thirty years our family has been entrepreneurial. We began our first family business in 1977. We were no more than kids with big dreams. One of the most important lessons we have learned through the years is it is crucial to have the right tools for the business. The tools we needed when we opened our first business are not the same as needed in today's world. We had never heard of an "Internet." We didn't even have fax machines. Computers were only for huge corporations with HUGE rooms in which to house the huge computers and lots of money to pay the huge electric bill for all the tons of air conditioning required to keep the computers cool -- yes, they had to be kept at a certain temperature.
In our business we tried to use the best technology for the time. When the "personal" computers came on the market, we knew that the way we did business would change. It was a company mile stone when we were able to spend $3,000 on a USED Apple computer -- it didn't even have a hard drive. The PDA's that are carried in our company today have more memory, storage and power than our first computer.
A few years later, we began to hear about email. AOL was the place to go to get email. So we signed up. We didn't use it too much. In fact it was probably months before we sent an email. The reason: We didn't know anyone else who had email address. More time passed and we knew that before long, everyone would be turning to the Internet for information and that we needed a website. The only thing, we didn't know anything about building a website. We spent money with companies who were supposed to have the knowledge to help us and we did not seem to get anything for our money. So we went back to square one and tried learning ourselves. We were able to build a basic presence on the web.
Recently we heard of a company that would give a FREE WEBSITE to people -- people with or without experience with websites. We have found that company to be a tremendous help to us. It has helped us improve our existing roofing company website, the website we maintain for our church, and is helping us build this e-commerce site.
